As May marks Older Americans Month, I’m proud to celebrate the experience and contributions of older Americans nationwide– especially those living with HIV. We have witnessed the evolution of this epidemic driven by community advocacy, medical innovation, and a constant push for increased healthcare access.

I also want to recognize the older Americans who have dedicated their lives to serving communities impacted by HIV. As 50% of people living with HIV are already over 50, your voices provide the critical scope and context that are essential for defining best practices for care.

NMAC’s commitment to the HIV community includes programming that captures the perspectives and needs of older Americans living with HIV. Our continued investment in this community is vital and aligned with NMAC’s six, recently released strategic priorities, especially #3: Build the Grassroots Response by Identifying and Building Community Leaders. See the full list of Strategic Priorities here.

I’m honored to be in community with the leaders and advocates in our HIV 50+ Strong and Healthy Program and our National HIV And Aging Network (NHAAN) which center support, connection, and policy education for people aging with HIV. While HIV 50+ is more focused on skill building, one-on- one professional and community development, NHAAN is an expansive network, connecting people living with HIV across the country around education and mobilization for HIV advocacy. Thank you to my NHAAN and HIV 50+ program members, and all older Americans, for all you do to move the needle forward in HIV science and care, and beyond. NMAC and I remain with you in this work.

About The HIV 50 + Strong and Healthy Program

NMAC’s HIV 50+ Strong & Healthy program equips adults living with HIV age 50 and over with the tools, resources, and opportunities to step into leadership and advocate for themselves and their communities.

We also invest in leadership development through paid internship opportunities with NMAC’s Center for HIV Treatment, Leadership, and Community Engagement, and by connecting our scholars to external leadership opportunities, including panel participation and presentations. Together, these experiences help scholars build visibility, skills, and momentum for lasting impact.

About NHAAN

The National HIV & Aging Advocacy Network (NHAAN) is a network of individuals advocating for our collective and cumulative interests as persons aging with HIV. We envision a world in which all people thrive as they age with HIV: physically, socially, financially, spiritually, emotionally, and in all aspects of our lives. The Network is an unincorporated project sponsored by NMAC as part of its HIV 50+ Strong and Healthy program.

We recently announced our NHAAN Executive Committee: view our members here!
