Most excellent article! I learned a lot of new information. For many years, I was a care-giver and all round support person for a man who was diagnosed in 1990. He died in 2018 from complications from surgeries unrelated to his initial diagnosis. He became "undetectable" about two years before his death. Thank you for all your efforts on behalf of everyone.

Just one detail to correct: Reagan wasn't obsessed with Gorbachev in 1981 because Gorbachev didn't come to power till 1985. Brezhnev, perhaps. And I think The Band Played On an excellent book and have no trouble at all skipping all the bits about Gaetan Dugas, apparently inserted on the insistence of the original publisher.

Dr gotlieb was my dr for nearly 15 years until my insurance changed. I loved him. Although i am neg, i called him one time screaming i was covered with kaposis sarcoma overnight. He said come in now. It was shingles. I laugh now, but he took me immediatley, and although shingles is no party, he put my mind at ease. Im lucky to have been his patient. He also appeared in a documentary i made on meth. Great guy!

Great piece. So interesting, although I wanted to hear more about Rock Hudson, from both of you! Thanks for this and to Dr. Gottlieb.

continued - who will as my ID doc understand what I've been through; the young docs (I'm 64) seem to think that today, being able to pop 1 pill for HIV and call it a day, 35+ years of living with the virus (almost half with no HAART) couldn't possibly impact my health today. It is always a pleasure to read about Joe. Thanks.

If it were not for Marcus Conant & Virginia Cafaro I wouldn't be here today. They protocols that they established for PCP prophylaxis helped set the standard of care in the late 80's early 90's. They also had a pool of specialists that kept us monitored for other opportunistic infection (eyes and brain). I'm currently being followed by another dermatologist (remember that was Marcus' specialty) that was also in the trenches from the very beginning. When these docs are gone (retirement, death)
