For the better part of the last century, the people of the United States enjoyed the benefits of a consumer culture that was unprecedented in human history. As we move into the future, we are now beginning to recognize that must we move all away from a culture of unrestrained consumption to one of creation, restoration and conservation. There is simply no alternative if we are to continue to thrive as a nation and lead the world into the next century of human existence on Earth.

Yes, David. Sweden is a very progressive nation, as is most of Europe. Sweden also has the 2nd highest tax rate in the world - which is not a bad thing. So, they are able to provide a good education and healthcare for its citizens. We've been so brainwashed here in the States to think that "taxes" are a bad thing. Taxes, if fairly shared by ALL citizens keep nations alive. If only more Americans would visit Europe (and other countries) so they could actually "see" the beauty or witness another point of view. Perhaps we really DON'T need to drive huge SUV's, build Targets, Wallmarts, Banks, Malls, Pizza Hut, McDonald's, Burger King, Home Depots, Lowes and huge supermarkets on every God-forsaken street corner? Perhaps if America spent more money on education, our children would be able to compete in a global society? Hopefully, Americans will realize this and attempt to change our society around. I'm afraid that most Americans won't want to give up their double mocha lattes and six trips to the Mall each week.
